Unravelling the Mysteries of Personality & Wellbeing [Who am I? Am I just a product of Nature or Nurture? What does it mean to live a life of happiness & well-being?]

Summary:
– Personality comes from within (our genetics – the bio-genic you) but also all the social influences (our immediate environment & wider culture) we encounter as part of growing up [i.e. both Nature & Nurture]. In addition, there are our personal aspirations, goals & “personal projects” (your values) – they give meaning & “the self” is created as a consequence
– through these various influences, you “enact” the “you” you will become (I.e. it develops over time & as a result of all these influences)

– the big 5 personality traits [Catelli]
Personality:
O: openness
C: conscientiousness
E: extroversion
A: agreeableness
N: neuroticism
[the big 5 factor traits – approx 50 to 60 percent of variation is genetic in origin]
[note: these all occur on a spectrum | most people refer to either bing an extrovert or an invert, but what about context & how these can change (& it can be appropriate too); people often ignore the other dimensions, which is to helpful – ie an ability “to craft a life” & be living a full life according to your values]

Authenticity – is a great predictor of well-being
– acting out of character can increase happiness according to research (particularly when done in accord with a person’s values
– he describes three kinds of authenticity:
1) You can do what feels right
– I am what I really want & need
2) do what is consistent with your cultural norms
– identifying with a particular group
3) the self – not because of my biology, my environment – but what I have chosen to be
– values-driven: enacting projects at require us to do things we want to – even if they do not come “naturally” [the chance to enhance yourself]
[note: we all “act out of character” a lot during each & every day]

Epigenetics
– research into human action can bring about a change in your genetic structure & traits

– experiments about acting according to what feels natural & what you would like to achieve [between 1 & 3 in Authenticity]
