4 Responses to Anxiety [Australian Psychological Society]

1) an intense physical response that leads to symptoms like a racing heartbeat
2) thoughts about the situation & how to cope with it, such as interpreting things negatively or unhelpfully – “this is really bad” or “I can’t cope with this”
3) a behavioural response such as avoiding situations that could trigger the response again, or feeling angry & restless
4) an emotional response because of the distressing nature of the anxiety

It is also characterised by:
– constant doubtin
– constant self-challenging counter-thoughts
– regular “don’t be stupid” self-talk
