7 elements of a token economy [when working with autistic children]*

1. Target behaviours
– select the desirable behaviours to be strengthened
2. Types of tokens
– choose the tokens to be used as conditioned reinforcers
3. Back-up reinforcers
– showcase the back-up reinforcers to be exchanged for tokens
4. Reinforcement schedule
– set-up a reinforcement schedule for token delivery (for desired behaviours)
5. Exchange criterion
– decide how many omens are needed to be exchanged for the reinforcers
6. Time/place for exchange
– set a time & place for exchanging tokens for backup reinforcers
7. Response cost
– employ a penalty where tokens are taken away for inappropriate behaviours
