STRESS – THE HIDDEN [Psychological] COST OF HAVING CHILDREN

– studies show couples with children are less happy than those without children
– economic study cited – the stress cost of having children
– two types of stress identified in the Australian & German surveys conducted for the study
1) financial stress
2) being short of time [this was found to be the most critical stressor for parents]
In Australia, the birth of a child adds to the time stress felt by both parents, however the stress effect felt by the mother is 3 times as big
– worse, the stress effect continued without abatement for the duration of the 4 year study
– tiredness, anxiety effects
