Thinking slow and REBT (Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy)

– Human beings are irrational thinkers by nature, but are capable of rational thinking
– human beings are prone to cognitive biases

Irrational idea or belief:
1. Distorts reality
2. Is illogical
3. Prevents you from reaching your goals
4. Leads to unhealthy emotions
5. Leads to self-defeating behaviours

Beck: Cognitive distortions/errors in thinking maintained by maladaptive schemas

– Brain has evolved to think fast & as a result takes short-cuts
– therefore can ignore relevant information
– irrational thinking can therefore arise

Slow brain is more capable of responsible & rational thinking
– train brain to “catch” irrational thinking
– slow down & notice your thinking
