Talking to Kids When They Need Help

– kids & teens tend to internalise feelings
– the need to open upon- you can assist by:
– make them feel safe
– why talking
– not being punished
– listen to them
– understand their perspective before offering suggestions
– your anxiety can prompt you to try & fix everything
– affirm & support their need or help
– tell them you are proud of them sharing their feelings – that it took courage
– be genuine
– be open, authentic & relaxed
– don’t be afraid to say “I don’t know”
– make the effort to find out
– warning signs of suicidality
– AOD use
– sudden drop in school performance
– talk of death/hurting oneself
