Origins of Dr Aaron Beck’s Theory of Depression & Anger
Beck thought Depression was anger turned inwards (self-critical)
– He had noticed the Masochistic nature of dreams of depressed patients
Experiment – do they need to be punished or approved of by the therapist
– ANSWER: approved of by the therapist (Not surprisingly)
– depressed patients (like everybody else)’ were seeking positive outcomes
– for depressed patients – nothing succeeds like success
Their Core beliefs are often that they are losers, inadequate, defective, unloveable
Dreams/reality – same messages (negative)
– Negative core Beliefs about themselves/distorted views of reality/ change – evidence, logical, alternative explanations
