Parent – What is Descriptive praise? | Mark Taylor | Canberra Psychologist

Posted on Updated on

Mark Taylor | Canberra Psychologist
– when the child is disruptive, parents can react emotionally & inadvertently “negatively reinforce” misbehaviour by providing the child with attention (even if it is negative)
– however, parents usually do nothing when the child is quiet
– Professor Mark Dadds suggests changing this and praising the child
– he says parents should remember the child wants to spend time with you
– he says parents would do well to remember not to give up when the child misbehaves, & to instead watch for good behaviour & praise the child in an unpredictable way, based on love & engagement so as to reinforce attachment
